Old
Fields is a 1,023 acre +/- recreational quail plantation, 15 minutes
east of Tallahassee and just a few miles from the Lloyd and I-10
interchange. The plantation is extremely well managed and absolutely
beautiful with bountiful live oaks,

rolling
red hills, two large floodable duck ponds, pastures, several large
bass ponds and the
famous Lake Drain. Best of all, it contains one of the ten most beautiful
natural features in North Florida, Old Fields Canyon. Letchworth
State Park, featuring the tallest Indian Mound in the State of Florida,
borders the property. The plantation contains one of the most significant
archeological sites in Florida including the site of a “prehistoric
city.” The plantation has been protected from development by
a conservation easement.

When
Florida was under Spanish ownership, the first surveyors came across
abandoned Indian old fields and noted it in their journals. Hence
the name Old Fields. Today, these “old fields” are hunting
courses bounded by numerous flowing streams. Water from Lloyd Creek
(flowing north) and the Lake Drain (flowing south) meet and both
go underground into the Floridian Aquifer below Old Fields Canyon,
creating one of the most beautiful and indescribable areas in North
Florida.
Old Fields is one of the most intensively managed plantations in
the belt. The quality of the wingshooting is incredible. Everything
is first class. Duck, dove, and quail hunting is spectacular. There
are 10 acres of planted dove fields and two horseback quail courses
containing 200 to 250 acres each. Two floodable duck ponds total
approximately 15 acres. The "Big Pond" is one of the largest
floodable duck ponds in North Florida and features three walkout
blinds. Lake Miccosukee borders the plantation to the north and has
someof the highest concentrations of migrating waterfowl in North
Florida.

Whitetail
Deer and Turkey have also been intensively managed. The groves of
mature white oaks and pristine hardwood bottoms offer both natural
feed and sanctuary. Of course, deer troughs are kept full year round.
There are over 37 acres in food plots.

Archeologically,
this is one of the most significant sites in the State. In fact, the State
purchased the development rights to forever preserve its treasures. The plantation
is
at the center of what was once a “prehistoric city.” The plantation
is famous for being a premier Weeden Island cultural site. The Weeden Island
culture dates between A.D. 200-900, and was one of the first to develop mound
building and incorporate artwork on ceramic vessels. It is believed that
they built Letchworth Mound, the tallest mound in Florida, located on the state
park
bordering the plantation. It is thought that the villages are located on
the plantation. Not only is the soil and location ideal for game and crops,
but
the Lake Drain offers an incredible natural flint quarry. This is one of
the few sites in Florida where flint is naturally exposed, resulting in wealth
for
the inhabitants since they did not have to trade or import chert for tools
or arrowheads. Today, artifacts are commonly found throughout the plantation.
Numerous
papers and studies have been written about these sites.

Improvements include a manager's house, large equipment barn and shop,
modest horse barn and pasture, a historical lake house is currently being
relocated to one of the ponds and by terms of the conservation easement the
right to construct
an additional residential structure up to 5,000 square feet and have two
related outbuildings of up to 2,000 square feet.

Old Fields Plantation is one of the premier entertainment properties in the
Red Hills. It offers a wealth of recreational opportunities and a once in a
lifetime ability to purchase a plantation in the belt. At a time when development
interests have overpowered recreational and family interests it is comforting
to own a property where the recreational memories will grow from generation
to generation. With the protection of a conservation easement , this is an opportunity
to purchase a plantation for recreational and family purposes without the development
price or pressure.
