Old Hornsby Place

The Old Hornsby Place quail program is unique in the plantation belt. A collaboration between Brad Mueller, Keith Parker and Ed Hart, the quail course is designed to handle daily professional dog training in addition to one to two full hunting days per week. Emphasis is placed on raising explosive coveys with a high bird density per acre. It is not uncommon to be able to shoot into 7-14 full coveys in a half day hunt. With the large amount of habitat edge this property boasts an unusually high number of birds per acre. The over 50 food plots and cover plots are an example that the birds get whatever they need in terms of habitat management. In addition to the native and planted feed, the courses are heavily fed with corn and milo every seven days.

Wild quail are typically supplemented starting in the beginning of October with several thousand birds released preseason and a smaller number throughout the season to replenish individual coveys. Predators are trapped throughout the year as the need arises. With professional bird dog training taking place heavy pressure is placed on the birds, the result being extremely wild and timid coveys. When the covey explodes they rise as a covey and move out in a hurry.
